I would love to give feedback on the question regarding how a teacher is referred to by children. I student taught in New York City in progressive school settings. These were both public and private. At all of these I was referred to by my first name. In these school settings adults are referred to by their first name to foster the concept that we are learners together. It also reinforces the idea that we do not earn respect because of our role as an adult or teacher, but of how we behave towards others, which includes children of all ages. Hearing this question made me wonder about the type of culture at this school. While this method of “name calling” is not for everyone, it is common to find in progressive school settings.
