Etiquette Extra - Toasting
As the new year approaches there may be an opportunity to employ a very traditional social skill, and offer a toast. There are few traditions as sacred as that of the toast. What may have started as a libation offering to the gods became a tradition for honoring guests. Once upon a time, a host drank from the communal vessel to prove goodwill (and the absence of poison) before offering drink to a guest. Now we use the toast to formalize relationships and offer praise at the most elaborate of functions, but never underestimate or forget the power of the informal toast to convey that same honor and goodwill among friends and family gathered with much less formality. Take a look at some Emily Post resources to brush up on your toasting skills.
We hope that the turning of the year offers you a chance both for reflection and for looking ahead, and that however you choose to mark the passing of time that life is full for you and yours. Keep an eye out for Thursday’s Etiquette Today article on great greetings. Until next time!
All the best,
Dan and Lizzie
