Your etiquette tip, quote and an Emily Post Cookbook recipe to start your weekend off right!
The Tip
When scheduling and managing playdates for kids it’s important to teach them that keeping a commitment once you’ve said yes is important. It can be tempting to change a yes to a no because you got an invitation for something that you’d rather do. But from an etiquette standpoint, it’s important to keep your social commitments - and a playdate is no different.
The Recipe
It’s apple picking season in Vermont and even though we had a nasty May frost that killed the apple crops this year, the ones that survived are delicious. With all the excitement over apples this time of year we thought Emily’s Apple Pie recipe would be a great fall classic.
Emily Post’s Cookbook, 1951, pg. 343
Apple Pie
Time: N/A
Serves: N/A
Ingredients
6 green apples
1 tsp. grated yellow part of a lemon peel [zest]
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
2 tbs. butter
dash salt
pie paste [pie crust dough]
Directions
Line pie plate with paste [pie crust dough]. Peel, core, and slice the apples and put one layer in the plate. Sprinkle with the mixed sugar, peel[zest], cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Repeat with another layer of apples, sugar, etc., until plate is filled. Add a little water if apples are not moist. Moisten edges of lower crust and cover with the upper crust. [Pinch or press the top and bottom crusts together at the edge.] Make several cuts in it to allow steam to escape. Bake 15 minutes in a 450℉. oven, then lower heat to 350℉. and bake 15 to 20 minutes more.

As she gets ready to depart on her great cross-country road trip in 1915 Emily Post stares down the camera as if to say, “Just try and stop me.” In all reality, she was probably saying something along the lines of, “Take the picture already so we can start! I don’t want to be late.”
