The Saturday Sip: November 4, 2023
Your etiquette tip, quote and an Emily Post Cookbook recipe to start your weekend off right!
The Tip
When eating soup, it’s smart to scoop the soup with your spoon moving away from you, toward the back of your bowl. This helps any accidental splashes to head toward the back of the bowl and not toward you. To get that wonderful last portion from your bowl, tip the bowl away from you, for the same reason. If the bowl slips, the contents won’t pour out toward you but away from you instead.
The Recipe
Cooler weather has us wanting warm roasted vegetables to accompany our dinners. Here’s Emily’s recipe for Roasted Potatoes.
Emily Post’s Cookbook, 1951, pg. 207
Roasted Potatoes
Time: 1 hour, 15 minutes
Makes: N/A
Ingredients
2 medium potatoes per person [large “new potatoes” suggested]
Water + salt for boiling
3/4 cup roast beef drippings
salt and pepper to taste
Directions
Put 2 medium-sized potatoes per person — use large new potatoes if possible — in salted boiling water for 15 minutes. Peel them and carefully cut out all eyes or other blemishes.
Put them in a hot, 400℉., oven in a pan with 3/4 cup of roast beef drippings. Add salt and pepper and baste with the hot fat. Roll potatoes over once or twice while roasting so that all sides will brown. If after 45 minutes they are not brown enough and you want to serve them, turn oven heat on full and give 5 minutes or so more.
