The Saturday Sip: March 4, 2023
Your etiquette tip, quote and an Emily Post Cookbook recipe to start your weekend off right!
The Tip
Engagement News Etiquette - While shouting from the rooftops may be the first method of spreading the word that comes to mind, it’s best to map out a strategy. If either of you have children, they must be the first to know of your engagement. Regardless of how well they get along with your partner, it may also be a good idea to tell the kids without your fiancé(e) in the room so they can have a chance to react privately with you first. As for the rest of your loved ones, you could cover all of your bases at once and choose to announce the news at a family party.
If not, then closest family (parents and siblings,) should hear the news first. If you need to ask them to keep it to themselves while you work your way through your nearest and dearest: grandparents and best friends, usually followed by aunts, uncles, cousins, godparents, and anyone else especially close to you. From there, word of mouth may get to others before you. After the inner most circles have been contacted directly then you can go ahead and announce on social media if you use it.
The Recipes
This week we’re going sweet with two recipes from Emily’s 1951 cookbook. The first is a Brown Betty with all it’s apple-cinnamon deliciousness, and to go with it (at Emily’s suggestion) a recipe called Foamy Sauce I. We do suggest reading the Brown Betty recipe all the way through before starting it.
Emily Post’s Cookbook, 1951, pg. 303
Brown Betty
Time: 1hr
Serves: 4
Ingredients
3 cups finely sliced apples
1 1/2 cups crumbled toasted white bread
1/3 cup butter
1/2 cup molasses (if no molasses, use 3/4 cup of sugar, instead of 1/4 cup)
1/4 tsp grated nutmeg
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup water
Directions
Toast slices of white bread, cut off and discard the crust, and crumble the bread. Place a layer of apples on the bottom of a buttered deep pie dish, then put in a layer of the crumbs. Sprinkle with mixed sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon, and dot with butter. Repeat until the dish is filled, finishing with a layer of crumbs on top. Pour the water and molasses evenly over the whole top layer. Put the baking dish in a pan of water and bake in a 350⚬F. oven for 45 minutes, until apples are cooked and top is browned.
Serve plain or with Foamy Sauce or Hard Sauce.
