The Saturday Sip: February 18th, 2023
Your etiquette tip, quote and an Emily Post Cookbook recipe to start your weekend off right!
The Tip
As a plus one, you should get as many details as possible before making the commitment. Ask about the classics: what’s the purpose of the event, when is it, and where it’s being held. But it’s equally important to find out what the attire expectation is and if there are any expectations around expenses. There are times when the invited guest takes care of all expenses and other times when this isn’t realistic. This is why it’s important to ask. “May I ask about the expenses involved? Things like travel, meals, a gift for the couple? I want to make sure I know what to expect if I say yes and that I can truly manage it.”
The Recipe
This recipe sounded great for a cold winter morning. No, you’re right, it sounds great for any time. While a delightful cookbook Emily’s is an inconsistent one, this recipe came with no indication of how much it yields (though we are guessing a lot from the 5 cups of flour!) and with no mention of how long the recipe takes outside the 30-minute bake time. Let us know what you discover when baking this delicious treat!

1/4 tsp salt
2 well-beaten eggs
1 1/2 cups milk
1 1/2 cups raisins
2 Tbsp. melted butter

2 Tbsp. Butter
light brown sugar [enough to put a 1/4 inch topping over your cake]
cinnamon

Mix thoroughly. [The 5 cups flour, 4 Tbsp. baking powder, 2 cups sugar, 1/4 tsp. salt]
Add to other ingredients and beat well. [2 well-beaten eggs and 1 1/2 cups milk]
Add raisins [1 1/2 cups] and then butter [2 Tbsp] and beat a full 2 minutes.
Spread dough evenly in a well-buttered 2-inch-deep pan. Cover the entire surface with granulated sugar to a depth of 1/8 inch. Dot every 1/2 inch with butter pressed into the surface. Cover with 1/4 inch of light brown sugar and sprinkle liberally with cinnamon. Bake in a 350-degree F oven for 1/2 hour or until done when tested with a straw or testing rod [tooth pick or knife]. Leave in pan until ready to serve. The cake may be reheated slightly just before serving.
