The Saturday Sip: December 31st, 2022
Your inspirational etiquette tip, Emily Post quote and an Emily Post Cookbook recipe to start your weekend off right!
The Tip
When introducing others, avoid saying things like “I know you two will get along wonderfully!” Or, “You simply had to meet, you have so much in common.” No one quite knows what makes us get along with some like we are peas in a pod, and others as if oil and water. It’s best to allow folks to figure out for themselves if they have a connection. To put it into an introduction is unnecessary. Instead say, “It’s a pleasure to introduce you to each other.” Or, “I’m so glad you’re finally getting a chance to meet.” This adds no pressure and expresses your own delight, without assuming.
The Recipe
This time we’re delving into the world of desserts with Emily. While Emily does include a more advanced recipe for Chocolate Mousse in her cookbook, we are also fans of her inclusion of this quick version which we hope you enjoy! We got quite the chuckle out of the spelling of syrup and Emily’s 1950s description of the freezer.
Easy Chocolate Mousse
This is so good that no one could imagine how easily it was prepared.
Pg 301 of The Emily Post Cookbook, 1951
Time: 15 Minutes, plus freezing time [2+ hrs]
Serves: 6
Ingredients
1 cup heavy cream
3/4 lb. chocolate sirup [syrup]
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
Directions
Whip the cream stiff, beat in first 1 whole egg and then the other. Beat in the chocolate sirup [syrup] and the vanilla till all is velvety smooth. Put [the] mixture into a freezing tray and put [it] in the ice-making part of your refrigerator [freezer] for 2 hours or longer [time may vary based on modern freezers being more efficient]. If you have a freezing compartment [again, freezer] with enough space, the mousse may be frozen in individual glass cups or in a melon mold.
