The Saturday Sip: December 14, 2024
Here's your etiquette tip, quote and an Emily Post Cookbook recipe to start your weekend off right!
The Tip
For Everyone: When bringing a dish either for a potluck or to a cookie swap style party, even if you haven’t been asked to, bring an ingredient card for the dish or treat so that guests with restrictions or allergies can best gauge if a dish is okay for them to eat.
For Our Swifties: Yes, it is okay to wish your favorite artist a belated happy birthday today! And, if you’re Taylor Swift and have received millions of birthday wishes on social media over the last 24 hours, it’s perfectly polite and reasonable to respond en masse with a blanket “Thank you for all the wonderful birthday wishes this year!” post. When possible, call out particularly thoughtful, funny, or meaningful messages.
The Recipe
Lizzie is throwing her holiday cocktail party today, with friends coming over for hot drinks, tasty nibbles, and some holiday treats! For a little holiday party inspiration, we chose Emily’s Cheese Fondue II recipe. Don’t forget to get your party on by entering our Holiday Cocktail Party Challenge at PartyClick.com. Cheese Fondue II (Unbaked)
pg 292-293 of The Emily Post Cookbook, 1951
Time: 20 minutes
Serves: 4
Ingredients:
1 lb. cheese (cut in small pieces)
⅓ cup butter
⅓ cup milk
½ tsp. salt
Pinch of cayenne or 10-12 drops Tabasco
1 beaten egg
Directions:
Melt cheese and butter, stirring in the top of a double boiler over simmering
water. Add slowly, while stirring, the heated but not boiled milk and the salt and cayenne.
Remove from the heat and beat in the egg with a wire whisk or a small portable electric beater. Serve at once over buttered toast in soup plates. And—if you can get them—put very finely sliced, fresh white truffles over the fondue. This combination is a superlative taste treat, but few indeed are the times one can get fresh white truffles.

Lizzie brought Thumbprints and English Toffee to a holiday cookie swap this year. The host was smart and asked everyone to bring an ingredient card.
I like the cards that you used for this. I’d like to get some like these. Could you please share the source? Thanks!
