Your Awesome Etiquette podcast episode for the week. Plus your weekly etiquette challenge, the Monday joke, and an etiquette extra on dining out with others.
On today’s show, we take your questions on who gets first dibs on a room at a vacation house, what to do with a friend who orders a lot at a restaurant and then asks to split the bill, and a fun question on how to get RSVPs to a Pig Pickin’! For community members, your question of the week is about speech-to-text etiquette. Plus, your etiquette salute and a postscript segment on Disability and Etiquette with an interview with Emily Voorde.
Etiquette Extra - Hosted at a Restaurant
Our friends at Debretts recently published an article titled Restaurant Etiquette for Guests. From hosts to guests, we loved this two-sided look at the roles and responsibilities when an invitation has been accepted and it is time to dine.
How should you behave when you’re taken out for a meal, whether it is by your boss, a friend or a date? Taking over the ordering, quibbling with the host’s wine choice, choosing the most expensive dish on the menu, power ordering, and complaining volubly to the waiter are all obvious no nos.
…Above all, remember that your host is being generous and hospitable, and you therefore owe them the courtesy of focusing on the food, the company, the conversation, and not your phone.

Weekly Etiquette Challenge
This week, the challenge is to hone your email skills! Our first challenge: read your emails aloud before sending them off—even the short ones. You’ll hear the tone of your voice and how the sentences sound. And if it’s a really important email, have someone else read it out loud to you.
Suddenly, the summer feels like it is winding down as we are back to etiquette work at Emily Post. Dan is on the road teaching dining etiquette in Denver, and Lizzie is conducting 13 wedding story interviews this week for the wedding book research - thank you all for your submissions! Whether this Monday finds you at your desk, your workbench, or enjoying your vacation, we wish you a polite and pleasant start to your week.
Until Thursday, take care, everyone.
All the best,
Lizzie and Dan
Happy-Monday Joke
