Welcome to Awesome Etiquette, where we explore modern etiquette through the lens of consideration, respect and honesty. On today’s show we take your questions on wearing the same color as the bridesmaids, contributing to the office bathroom supplies, telling someone you’re sick without giving too many details, and the cost getting services (like a haircut) from a friend. For Awesome Etiquette Sustaining members our question is about talking in the library. Plus your most excellent feedback, etiquette salute and a postscript on Bridal Shower themes.
Bonus Question
Shhhhhhhhhhhhh, your question of the week is about talking in the library.
Etiquette Extra - Happy Valentines
As I was sitting with my six year old at the kitchen table this weekend, participating in what she was calling a ‘valentines making factory’ I was struck by how much the scene looked like our ‘thank-you note making factory’ after the last birthday. We were in full on production mode, creating just the right little note, with the right sticker or splash of color or carefully scrawled out sentinment for each classmate (and don’t forget the teacher). It was impossible not to feel the joy of it!
It was a reminder to me that I wanted to pass on to all of you; that contained somewhere within the expectations, the hustle to get reservations, to not overpay for roses, to score the last box of chocolate is a sweet sentiment. At its best, Valentines day is a celebration of love, of human connection. If we can find a way to connect with that we might just bring those we are close to a little closer this Feb 14th.
If you are looking for a way to do that, try creating a handwritten valentines for someone who has supported you in the last year. Tell them you appreciate them and are glad they are part of your life. Mention something special or unique to the relationship you share. It has the potential to make both you and them feel good. Share love, be sincere, and please have a happy valentines day.
Until next time.
We wish you well,
Dan and Lizzie
